Standard Science in Qur’an Collection and Compilation
The question arises as to whether the Qur’an compilation, which began over a thousand years ago, can be considered a scientific standard. The answer is that “standards” are considered a scientific tool. This begins with clearly defined procedures for gathering data, materials, and methods to ensure reproducibility. Procedures are documented, verified for accuracy, and consultation with experts is sought. Historically, Qur’an compilation was conducted in accordance with the aforementioned guidelines, which can be considered a standard scientific process.
The Qur’an was revealed between 610 and 632 CE. Revelation, or revelation, was transmitted through the mouth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), who could not write. The Sahaabah who listened to it recorded the revelations on available materials, such as twigs, stones, animal skins, and bones. They then read the written text to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to verify its accuracy. These records were known as “mushafs” (mushafs), and were kept by the Sahaabah for recitation, review, and memorization. After the death of the Prophet in 632 CE, unrest erupted in the Islamic empire. A major battle ensued at Yamamah (near present-day Riyadh) known as the Battle of Riddah (the Infidel War). As many as 360 Muslims who memorized the Quran, known as “haffazs,” died. Caliph Abu Bakr then proceeded to compile and compile the Quran into a written record to secure the Islamic state. This led to the creation of a scientifically standardized Quran compilation and compilation.
Caliph Abu Bakr ordered all those who possessed mushafs to compile them in one place. He entrusted the project to Zayd bin Thabit, a prominent Sahaab, to oversee the project. Zayd bin Thabit independently verified each verse, with Umar ibn Khattab also reviewing the same. Two reliable witnesses then confirmed that the verses were written in the presence of the Messenger of Allah. Finally, they were combined with verses compiled by other Sahaabah according to the same criteria. This systematic work was then developed, enabling the Muslim community to verify, authenticate, and use them as a source of information.
This complete Quran was passed on to Caliph Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and upon his death, it was bequeathed to his daughter, Hafsah, the widow of the Messenger of Allah. During the reign of Caliph Uthman ibn Affan, he borrowed the manuscript from Hafsah and established a committee to make copies of the manuscript. He organized the sequence of the surahs (chapters) correctly. Once complete, the Caliph ordered the destruction of all other copies. The Uthmanic Codex was completed in 650 CE, 20 years after the death of the Messenger of Allah. Subsequent revisions included only the correction of the letters. Periods and diacritics have been added to make it easier for non-Arabic speakers to read, while the content remains essentially the same to the present day.
