(English below)

Vitamin C May Support Brain Health

The importance of vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, has been discussed academically for over a century. Initially, it was used to treat colds. Later, claims of its potential cancer prevention were made, but this topic gradually faded. Now, a new focus is on vitamin C’s brain-related benefits. Let’s explore some of the interesting academic aspects of vitamin C’s brain health.

A new study addresses the question of whether vitamin C can improve brain health in older adults. Led by Professor Haruka Nagaya of Hirosaki University in Japan, the research, published in June 2026 in the open-access journal PLOS One, studied over 2,000 older adults. It found that those with low blood vitamin C levels tended to have less gray matter in the brain and weaker connections in brain networks related to memory, attention, and other cognitive functions.

This research suggests that higher blood vitamin C levels are linked to stronger brain structure and stronger brain connections in older adults, demonstrating that good vitamin C nutrition may contribute to improved cognitive health. Contrary to previous beliefs that vitamin C supplementation did not address age-related cognitive decline, and given the limited research in this area, this study focused on analyzing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and plasma samples from 2,044 Japanese adults over the age of 64. The research team used MRI scans to measure the volume of gray and white matter in the brains of each participant, taking into account differences in overall brain size. They also examined connectivity within the default mode network, a group of interconnected brain regions that play a crucial role in attention, memory, and other brain functions.

The researchers found that volunteers with low plasma vitamin C levels tended to have decreased gray matter volume and weaker default mode network connectivity. Supplementation to maintain optimal vitamin C levels led to improved cognitive function in older adults. The research could not definitively determine whether vitamin C is a direct cause of these cognitive problems. However, the finding that increasing vitamin C levels through supplementation had a positive effect on cognitive performance suggests that vitamin C supplementation may enhance cognitive function, particularly cognitive abilities. Stay tuned for further news on this topic.
